He completed his MD at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, followed by residency at University of Colorado and a glaucoma fellowship at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He is Professor of Ophthalmology, Slater Family Endowed Chair, Vice Chair of Translational Research, Chief of Glaucoma Service, and co-director of the Glaucoma Fellowship at Colorado. He has over 400 publications, edited major glaucoma texts, filed over 120 patents including the Kahook Dual Blade and Harmoni modular lens, and was twice named Inventor of the Year at the University of Colorado.
